MO’NIQUE TAKES HOME BEST SUPPORTING OSCAR

THE FACTS
Mo’Nique, Geoffrey Fletcher win at the Oscars.
THE SPIN
For months now there’s been story after story criticizing Mo’Nique for not playing the traditional Oscar game. Some even suggested that she be snubbed for her portrayal as Mary Jones in Precious as a means of humbling her.
But last night Mo’Nique silenced her critics and became the fifth black actress to win an Academy Award after being named Best Supporting Actress.
For those wondering why Mo’Nique wore a flower in her hair – no she’s not jacking Niecy Nash’s style. She wore the flower as a tribute to Hatti McDaniel, the first black actress to win an Oscar. The same applies to her dress color as Mo’Nique noted it’s the same color McDaniel wore when she won her Oscar in 1940.
Mo’Nique’s production company is currently developing a biopic which Mo’Nique may star in.
As for her comment about “politics” in her acceptance speech, Mo’Nique explained backstage.
She said: “Through this journey and process, some journalists and some reporters wrote, ‘Somebody needs to teach Mo’Nique a lesson; someone needs to teach her how the game is played.’ I am proud to hold this Oscar in my hand, because the Academy said, ‘We are not willing to play the game.’ ”
Also making history last night was Geoffrey Fletcher, who became the first black person to win honors for Best Adapted Screenplay.
In a recent Los Angeles Times profile the Harvard graduate revealed that for years he struggled to make waves as a screenwriter – at one point working various temp jobs to pay the rent. Director Lee Daniels tapped Fletcher to adapt the novel Push for film, making Fletcher’s first produced screenplay now a history making piece of work.
Although Gabourey Sidibe did not win Best Actress, she looked beautiful and I will forever love her for telling a reporter that when it comes to actor Gerard Butler, “I’d hit that.”
Same goes for Lee Daniels, who while not winning Best Director, will likely return to the ceremony in the years to come.
And sorry if any of you are a fan, but I’m glad Avatar did not win Best Picture. It was a beautiful movie and technically speaking, awe inspiring. But for all of that innovation in how the film was shot the actual story was about as new in concept as a rock.
It was like FernGully meets Dancing With Wolves with a sprinkle of Pocahontas for good measure. James Cameron got my money and yours, so I’m sure he’ll be OK, but really there were some serious racial undertones prevalent in that film.
Besides, The Hurt Locker was an exceptional film and I’m glad box office grosses didn’t deter voters from voting with their conscience. Here’s to hoping that in the future The Hurt Locker co-star Anthony Mackie scores a nod. He can’t be punished for his ‘Pac part in Notorious forever, can he?
Now that you’ve heard my take on the Oscars we’d love to hear from you all.
Did you enjoy the Oscars? Did your favorites win?
Am I wrong for sometimes referring to Avatar as the “Big Blue Bungalow” and for throwing shade to Sigourney Weaver for looking like the love child of Bo Derek and Papa Smurf?

Mo’Nique’s speech was fake. Her “above everybody attitude” sucks
it was a horrible speech!
How much longer do we have to endure Mo’Nique and her celebration of fatness? I’m happy a sister won the Oscar but her speech sucked. Why can’t mainstream Hollywood celebrate black women who aren’t a physical mess? They just love greasy fat chicks… and we keep encouraging it. Shame on Mo’Nique and shame on us for making her feel like it’s okay to be fat! Cause it ain’t! Hit the effin gym already.
I commend Monique for doing what she felt she needed to do ~ AND GUESS WHAT she got the Oscar. No one can tell you what you should do but you. As far as her being overweight.. that is her size it doesnt define her. She is Monique and she is an oscar winner… while the rest are just leaving comments. Monique I look forward to your future endeavers.
Congrats to Moe, I’m glad she is keeping it real…
Oh and what other heavy woman has won an award? Who is saying it is okay to be overweight. Moe has loss lots of weight. She also won that Oscar. LOL
It should have been a proud moment for all of us when Mo’Nique’s name was called as the 2010 Academy Award WINNER for BEST Supporting Actress!!! I wish more Actors/Actresses had the ability to go beyond what is typical and expected instead of just settling for an average performance in an average script, just to say they got a part in a movie. Mo’Nique at any size is Mo’beautiful, Mo’talented, Mo’graceful, Mo’stylish, Mo’intelligent, Mo’real, Mo’loved, and watch the LORD bless her some Mo. I hope that the LORD will add writer and director to her resume, because serious or funny, she knows how to hold our attention and teach us a lesson at the same time. Before criticizing our Shinning Star, reality check yourself and add up your nominations and wins.
I love when our acomplishments are added to the encyclopedia, and the history books have to be updated for something so positive. Students now have Oscar winner Mo’Nique to add to their list of people they can do a black history project on. (Fill out the 2010 Census Form and be counted)! Spread the word
To all the Mo haters — What have you got that Mo doesn’t? An Oscar!!!
Jayson asked:
How much longer do we have to endure Mo’Nique and her celebration of fatness?
How much longer do we have to endure you and your celebration of blackness (if your black) or whitesness (if you are white)? Get the point.
— People come in all sizes, skin pigmentation, etc etc. The chance of Mo knocking on your door asking for help is zero — So stop the hating.
I hope she can keep fit a little.
I hope she can keep fit a little.
Even
I hope she can keep fit a little.
Even she is famous all around the world.
I am a big Mo’Nique fan, but not only did the speech suck, its always the same ole thing when she delivers. Eyebrows bent down, all serious as if she is the first black woman to ever receive an award period. Although I’m glad she won. Yes Hollywood has a long way to go and I don’t think we’ll see much change in our lifetime. I think she did well in the movie “Precious”. Her previous radio show sucked and she tried twice at it. Same thing for the talk show. Once again its the same thing when she interviews someone eyebrows all bent down as if everything is so damn serious. It appears to be fake, put on and she loses her audience. She is a great comedian and should probably do more movie roles and leave the talk/radio shows alone. Even Samuel Jackson threw his eyes up in the air becuase he knew that “same ole” speech was coming.
While applaud her accomplishment, i would hardly say that Mo Nique keeps anything real. I am not sure i understand what that is supposed to mean. Why because she doesn’t shave her legs? Because she permits her husband to sleep with others outside her marriage. that is hardly real to me. that spells self esteem issue and a lack of knowing what REAL marrige is.
Maybe her shaving her legs is not real to some folks, but it is to her. What she does with her husband is her business and her choice. As I said if she was lying about it she wouldn’t be real. Since she is admitting what’s up in her life that is keeping it real without a lie. She still have an Oscar on her shelf. So if her self esteem is low. It was high enough for her to win that award.
I believe there is so much more we can do about the issue of Molestation and Incest. After watching the movie, Precious, with Monique and other great actor and actresses, I feel that now is the time to reach out to those that are afraid to speak up and speak out. After the awards and celebration of a great and heart-moving movie, it time to do something more than purchase the DVD, because someone may be touched inappropriately, as we speak. I believe now is the time to fight back by offering a Sexual Abuse HOTLINE toll-free number EX. (1-800-TELLNOW) for that young girl or young male that is being abused and molested and afraid to tell. I really hope that this message falls in the right hands and help save someone for such a embarraSsing and painful experience. We have been informed, now let’s take action to bring an end to childhood molestation. Let’s save our children, before it’s too late.
Sometimes I really wonder if some of these bloggers are white people who hate black people. Because the thought of thinking that our people hate on each other like this is just totally unacceptable. A little hint for those of you who can only compare your little strength with someone else’s weakness When you compare your little strengths to someone else’s weakness it’s small and simply sad! Trashy, belittling, idiotic, misery on display. What do you look like, what have you achieved, appearance is a small portion sweet hearts of identifying success, victory or triumph. To read each day a bunch of people who don’t have to reveal themselves belittle others especially African Americans, Blacks whatever you call yourselves, etc…is just small. Small, Small, Small thin doesn’t validate anything except genes, food intake or discipline that’s all. This sister broke history in half and this is the best some of you low, low, little lives can offer in verbal expression, give me and yourself a break. Oh, and Mo too. God help and deliver us from evil for thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory, forever and ever AMEN!
Hollwood and the Academy go through these periods of “sympathy” and Let’s clear our “conscience” awards from time to time. I stopped watching the Oscars when they became a parody of quality and ethics, some years back. Let’s see, they did not award The Color Purple the awards it deserved–too violent, Spielberg was ahead of his time, they said. Truly fantastic actors in what is now a classic film, went unrecognized largely, due to politics. Now, a stand-up comedy actress wins an Oscar. Truly, the Academy has lost it. Horrible, gaudy, loud talk show character. Reminds me of the old Amos and Andy shows. People wake up, and get a clue. Winning does not equal acceptance. And then when you give such a speech–see what parts you are offered. Did Ms. McDaniel become a Hollywood Star??? Think about it.
Congrat! to Mo’nique you are so deserving of your award. Be up and stay beautiful always!
